Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font wants to lure Pep Guardiola back from Manchester City and promises to keep Lionel Messi at the club.
Earlier, Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned as president at the Camp Nou on Tuesday ahead of a vote of no confidence in his leadership, including the club’s entire board.
Following Bartomeu’s resignation, Barcelona’s presidential election will reportedly take place in the second week of January and Font will be placed as the top choice to fill the post.
Font, 48, said if he won the post, he would call Guardiola back as head coach, bring in a former player with a big name and ensure Argentina star Messi stay with the team.
Guardiola excelled with Barcelona from 2008 to 2012 by leading the team to three LaLiga titles and two Champions League titles.
Messi, meanwhile, expressed his desire to leave Barca last August before canceling his intention to avoid any legal disputes but his contract will expire at the end of the 2020-21 season.
Font told Sky Sports: “Our intention is to form a very strong and competitive project and we are lucky that Barca have inherited the way Johan Cryuff has applied with this organization.
“And all the professionals who know about this way are also the supporters and lovers of this club – like Pep Guardiola, Xavi, (Andres) Iniesta, (Carles) Puyol.
“They are all legends who love Barcelona but do not work with Barca today – we need to bring them back to ensure we have a very competitive project.
“The only thing Messi needs to know is that he is part of this competitive project that will inspire him to win the next Champions League.
“We have no doubt that if we get the honor of leading Barcelona, we will achieve it,” he said.
Barcelona are currently ranked 12th in the LaLiga after a slow start under Ronald Koeman this season.
