PARIS: Two-time European champions Benfica were eliminated from the Champions League in the qualifying round early this morning after losing 2-1 to PAOK Thessaloniki.
The Portuguese giants, who won the European Cup twice in the 1960s, were eliminated through goals from Dimitrios Giannoulis and Andrija Zivkovic.
Benfica finished second in the second division of Portugal but faced a challenging draw against PAOK, which is second in the Greek Super League.
They did not have a chance to overcome the defeat as the third qualifying round was held by knockout.
Dynamo Kiev eliminated AZ Alkmaar with a 2-0 victory while Gent defeated Rapid Vienna 2-1.
