BUENOS AIRES: Lionel Messi dedicated the success of the Copa America to the family, country and the late Diego Maradona.
“I want to dedicate this success to my family who have always given me the strength to move forward, to my dear friends, to all who have given support and to the 45 million Argentines suffering from this virus (COVID-19),” he said via Instagram.
Argentina approached 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 before the Copa America which saw Buenos Aires refuse to host the tournament alongside Colombia following an increase in cases of infection.
Messi also paid tribute to Maradona who passed away in November last year by saying: “Diego will definitely continue to give us encouragement wherever he is.”
Argentina’s victory over Brazil saw it not only become Messi’s first major trophy, but the country’s first continental championship in 28 years.
However, COVID-19 caused Argentina not to organize any celebrations for the success.
