MANCHESTER: Bruno Fernandes has extended his contract with Manchester United until 2026, making the midfielder one of the highest paid at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has been a mainstay for the Red Devils since joining them from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, scoring 49 goals and making 39 assists in 117 appearances.

United have the option to extend the contract until 2027.

“Since I joined Manchester United, I already have a special relationship with the club and also our great supporters,” Fernandes said.

“I grew up watching this team and dreaming of the opportunity to play here. That dream is now a reality and this is an honor.”

Giving Fernandes a new contract is among the main tasks of the new United CEO, Richard Arnold after replacing Ed Woodward in January.

Fernandes’ contract still has three years left but his salary will reportedly be increased to suit his status with the team.

Despite the 27 -year -old’s outstanding performance, United have failed to win any trophies in the last five years.

But Fernandes believes ‘the best moment has not yet arrived’ with United.

“There’s a lot more I want to achieve here and I know everyone on this team wants the same thing.

“We want to provide the much -anticipated success of the supporters.

“We’ve shared a lot of great moments over the last few years but I can provide better ones for the team,” he added.
