Klopp: Kelleher Our Savior

LIVERPOOL: Jurgen Klopp praised his goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for his outstanding performance as he helped Liverpool bounce back from a penalty shootout in the quarter -finals of the English League Cup.

Liverpool will face Arsenal in their first semi-final since 2017, after twice bounced back to equalize for a 3-3 result and a 5-4 win on penalties when Kelleher saved shots from Luke Thomas and Ryan Bertrand.

The semi -finals will be held reciprocally on 5 and 12 January. Last year there was no reciprocity and Klopp hopes the same will be done this time to loosen up his tight schedule.

“I think it’s better to just hold it once, but obviously what I’m saying doesn’t matter. If there are two games, we’ll play two games. But it’s more helpful if it’s just once,” Klopp said.

Liverpool were so close to missing out on those two semi -finals when trailing by two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game, but they bounced back in the second half and Taki Minamino’s last -minute goal dragged the match to a penalty shootout where Kelleher was the savior.

“Of course it’s important, but he’s a great goalkeeper. He has talent and he’s good with his feet, he also understands the game.

“This isn’t the first time he’s been part of a great game, the same thing happened against Arsenal and he saved us this time, it really helped,” said the German.
