PALERMO, Italy: Roberto Mancini suffered the most painful defeat of his career as manager after Italy were stunned 1-0 by Northern Macedonia in the 2022 World Cup playoffs.

The defeat saw Italy miss out on the World Cup finals for the second time in a row despite coming up with a reputation as European champions in the qualifying campaign this time around.

“Last July was the best thing that ever happened in my career, this time it was the most disappointing. I am very sad for my players.

“It’s a huge disappointment for me to talk about my future right now,” Mancini said.

The head of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, however, wants the operator to continue to guide the national squad.

Mancini’s side were ridiculed after a defeat that saw them have to wait until 2026 to have a chance at the World Cup.

“It’s hard to talk about a match where we had 40 tries and they only had one or two.

“I’m a coach, when something undesirable happens in football it’s the coach’s fault, so I’m responsible,” he said.
