MADRID: Barcelona star Lionel Messi may be suspended for 12 games after being sent off in the Spanish Super Cup final against Athletic Bilbao, early this morning.
And the Spanish media also demanded that the player apologize for the mistake he made.
Messi was ruled out after he failed to control his emotions before fouling Asier Villalibre, who had previously scored an equalizer for Bilbao in the 90th minute.
The goal dragged the match into extra time before Bilbao won 3-2.
And as a result of the first red card incident he received after 753 games with Barcelona, Messi may be suspended for 12 games thus affecting the team’s hopes of rising to the title.
The Catalan giants are now seven points behind leaders Atletico Madrid – who have two games in hand.
The Marca newspaper reported that Messi will be suspended for the Copa Del Rey action against Cornella this week and the next round of the Spanish Cup.
If Barca lose, Messi may be suspended for three more La Liga matches.
But the newspaper reported that Messi’s serious offense could result in him being suspended for 12 matches.
Marca also published an article demanding Messi apologize with the headline: “Messi, you should have apologized.”
