MILAN: AC Milan will return to the Champions League after a long wait this week in one of the biggest competition by visiting Liverpool early this Thursday morning Malaysian time in search of the greatest prize in European football.
The two teams collected 13 European Cups between them and for the rivalry at Anfield, the Reds are now ranked among the most feared teams on the continent under Jurgen Klopp when they win the Champions League in 2019.
The Italian club will play for the first time in the group stage since 2013.
They are now more confident after a quick start in Serie A that gave them nine perfect points in their first three games.
Eight years have been a difficult period for the seven -time European champions who have not won Serie A in a decade and the last time they were crowned Europe’s best was in 2007 when they beat Liverpool in Athens.
It was the last match between the two teams and it came after two years the Reds suffered the most traumatic defeat in Milan’s history when they bounced back from a three-goal deficit against the Rossoneri star squad before winning on penalties in the final.
Since then Milan, the most successful Italian team in Europe failed to get past the quarter-finals of the Champions League and in 2019, while going through a process of financial recovery due to ownership from China, failed to reach the Europa League group stage with Dudelange, Olympiakos and Real Betis.
The group is stronger this time around with La Liga title holders Atletico Madrid and Portuguese champions Porto set to block their path to the knockout stages but Milan legend Arrigo Sacchi tells Stefano Pioli is now on track.
