Ronaldo, Sancho Brought United To The Last 16

PARIS: Manchester United booked a place in the last 16 of the Champions League when Cristiano Ronaldo scored in a 2-0 win at Villarreal just now while Chelsea also advanced after beating Juventus.

Three -time European champions United, who are going through their first game since sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, need a win to secure a place in the top two of Group F.

However they face great pressure because defeat can destroy that dream.

David de Gea made two great saves for United and Michael Carrick, who led the team, took advantage of Ronaldo’s goal in the 78th minute.

Jadon Sancho, who has been a player often criticized since his big move from Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, put in a good individual performance with his first goal for the club shortly thereafter.

“It’s not an important decision for me personally. It’s important for the players and the club,” Carrick said.

Ronaldo’s goal was the 799th of his career, 140th in the Champions League and sixth in this year’s tournament.

Another place in the group can still be won after Young Boys and Atalanta drew 3-3 in Bern.

Late goals from Vincent Sierro and Silvan Hefti gave the Swiss champions a 3-2 lead but Luis Muriel blasted home in the 88th minute for the visitors.

Atalanta will face Villarreal in Bergamo next month.
