BASEL, Switzerland: Sergio Ramos failed to complete two penalties as Spain needed an equalizer late in Gerard Moreno’s game for a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in the League of Nations match just now.
Ramos, who made 177 appearances for Spain to make history as a European player with the most appearances, overcame Gianluigi Buffon of Italy who has 176 caps.
However, despite the lack of response, it was a night that the defense had to forget in Basel when he saw an attempt to be saved by Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer but once again got a chance that was also missed through a ‘Panenka’ style attempt.
Spanish coach Luis Enrique defended his captain after the match.
“The number of penalties scored by Sergio is great,” he said. “If there is a third penalty, he will also take the kick.”
Ramos had previously scored 25 consecutive penalties for Spain but it was a risk when his side now have to beat Germany in Sevilla early Wednesday morning if they want to advance to the last four.
“We want to win here and the team is trying to finish,” Moreno said. “It didn’t happen but it was still on hand to keep going, even though we were facing a tough match.”
