SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia: Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea struggled to defend their advantage and missed out on a chance to finish at the top of Group H of the Champions League in a dramatic 3-3 tie against Zenit Saint Petersburg, here, just now.
The Tuchel -led squad has already qualified for the last 16 and hopes to take first place which could theoretically get an easy draw at the knockout stage.
They only slightly missed a chance when Magomed Ozdoev blasted home an equalizer that left Chelsea two points behind group champions Juventus.
Timo Werner put Chelsea ahead after 84 seconds through the club’s fastest goal in the Champions League.
Claudinho equalized and Sardar Azmoun put Zenit ahead in the first half.
Romelu Lukaku, who made his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury against Malmo in October, equalized with his 11th goal for the club since exploding against Zenit in September.
Werner looked to be able to give victory with five minutes left but Ozdoev’s last -minute goal added to the problem of what Tuchel is going through at the moment.
After Chelsea lost 3-2 at the hands of West Ham who kicked them out of the top of the English Premier League (EPL), the result was another disappointment for the Blues.
“My analysis is very clear: our character changes when we’re ahead and this is something we’ve never done and can’t do,” Tuchel said.
“Once we start getting results and changing our character, we will be punished.
“Suddenly when we conceded two goals, we showed a reaction. But it was when we took the lead and conceded. It happened to us at West Ham and it happened again today.”
